dictionary just because at one time they may have been looked up by a handful of scholars. We consulted everybody under the sun. We wrote thousands of letters to people. We had every section checked and rechecked by recognized authorities.

Well, the next deal that we made after the Book-of- the-Month was with Time-Life. We gave them a pre-publication deal so they could offer the dictionary by mail at $19.50. Our own retail price is $25, which I consider a great bargain as prices go today. I don't know how long we'll be able to maintain it;

Q:

At $25 you sell it. How much do you make per dictionary?

Cerf:

It varies with the discounts that you have to give.

Q:

On the average.

Cerf:

I can't give you an exact figure. It's quite a decent profit. We have to get back that huge investment.

Q:

I realize that.

I'd love to have you tell the story now maybe--I think that it's sort of interesting--about some of your trips. Since I've been interviewing you, you have been out on several of your lecture tours.
