celebrities who were in town. We were not hermits on that show. We all got around town in one way or another. We would often meet the guest ahead of time, and he would get very embarrassed when he saw us and betray himself. Half of the time, we had a pretty good idea who the mystery guest was going to be. If they would sneak somebody into town-- and when the guests began disguising their voices after a while, we were lost.

The funny thing with mystery guests on “What's My Line?" was that they didn't want us not to guess them. It was a loss of face. After fooling us for a couple of minutes, they began to get frantic and practically tell us who they were. It was terribly funny. They didn't want to be missed. It showed that they weren't famous enough. After a couple of rounds, if they were disguising their voices, they would accidentally on purpose, use their true voice very carefully so that we would be able to guess who they were.

We had some very funny experiences. I think that the funniest one was when Bob Hope was a mystery guest one time. We knew damned well that it was going to be Bob Hope because he was plugging a terrible movie he had made--one of his worst, and he's made some bad ones. Movies are not really his best thing. He's great as a monologist and a wonderful person as an M.C., but in movies he has done some pretty sloppy work and this latest one was a disaster. It needed help so he came to New York and appeared on just about every
