In that case you did know who it was ahead of time?

Cerf:

No. We learned the facts later.

I'm not sure that we should be devoting so much time to “What's My Line?" But there was one Sunday that we did this show out of New York, the only time in seventeen years. We did it in Chicago for a couple of very good reasons. One: the Democratic National Convention was there and John Daly was covering it for ABC. He had to be there. Two: Dorothy was doing feature stories on the Convention--she was a top reporter as well as a columnist--so she had to be in Chicago, as well. One of our co-sponsors that year with Remington Rand was Hazel Bishop, also located in Chicago. The Hazel Bishop people said that if we'd do the show from Chicago, they'd pay all of the special costs. It cost about $20,000 just to move that show to Chicago for one showing, but they figured the extra publicity justified it. They gave a great big party after the show and it was big stuff all around. We had a ball.

The mystery guest that night in Chicago was Pearl Mesta. When the show was over, I, very annoyedly, went up to John Daly and said, “What in heaven's name was the idea of having Pearl Mesta as a mystery guest again? We had her only about four or five months ago. Is she such a big shot that we have to have her twice in six months?" John said, “You don't know how happy we were to get Pearl Mesta. You won't believe what happened today. We had as mystery
