You know, even though there was some conflict, Lombard knew what was good for him, said of course, he would allow-any speaker he had signed to go to Macalester, too.

Macalester is in St. Paul; the University of Minnesota is in Minneapolis. That's like going from China to Russia today because Minneapolis and St. Paul are always at each other's throats. They are very jealous of each other although you cross a single street from Minneapolis to St. Paul.

So I went out to Macalester and spoke in the morning there and simply fell in love with the place. It's a very excellent little college. The reason that DeWitt Wallace loved it so was that his father had been head of Macalester when it was so poor that for two or three years they couldn't pay him any salary. The Wallace kids had to go out selling newspapers--anything to enable the family to survive. DeWitt Wallace today is the owner with his wife of the huge Readers Digest, worth millions and millions of dollars. They have no children so almost all of this fortune is destined to go to Macalester!

As I say, it's a fine little college with a wonderful spirit. The president, who was just newly appointed when I got there, was named Harvey Rice--a very nice man. When we went to his study after it was over, I said, “I don't want this $500 check. I'd like to start a scholarship fund and I'd like to give the small income of it to the leading English student each spring in the graduating class.
