possibly make up what he has shelled out. The result is that he loses his shirt and gets angry at the author. Very often authors get so much money in advance that it destroys them. You know examples as well as I do.

Q:

You've given some examples in these interviews.

Cerf:

James Jones and Irwin Shaw.

Also in 1942--nepotism sometimes pays off--my uncle, Herbert Wise, who played a big part in my life, and my wife together edited an anthology called Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural. It was probably the best anthology of its kind ever compiled, and has sold over 100,000 copies.

Q:

Did your wife edit it under the name of Phyllis Frazer... because I know that that's what she does usually?

Cerf:

Yes.

Q:

She has done several children's books, too, hasn't she?

Cerf:

Yes, indeed. Phyllis is a genius at these juveniles. If she had to make a living therefrom, she'd be a rich woman today. Phyllis‘understanding of children is fantastic. There isn't akid I've ever seen whom she hasn't won over in about fifteen minutes. When she was an editor of our Beginner Books, she showed her expertise. Today she's on the National Book Council.
