Q:

Where is he now?

Cerf:

He has just done a book on Spain, which has just been taken by the Book-of-the-Month Club. His books are almost automatically Book-of-the-Month Club choices. This new one is a non-fiction book called Iberia, which will be a certain success. It's going to be a very expensive book because it has dozens of beautiful photographs. What would be just sort of a travel book for somebody else, for Jim Michener is a triumph.

He's a most meticulous workman. For Hawaii he had fifteen books of notes before he started writing. For The Source he lived in Tel Aviv and other cities in Israel and Syria for a year before he wrote the book, picking up history and folklore and learning how these people live. That's the way he works. For the Spain book, he spent endless time there.

He's got a dozen projects lined up a head. He's really interested in politics on the side. I selfishly wish that he'd spend less time on politics and more on books!

Q:

1948 certainly was a big year for you, I must say!

Cerf:

Then we had our full quota of Broadway play hits. People think that I'm crazy to publish these plays. They usually lose money because it's hard to read a play. There's
