Very cold, too.

Cerf:

Not as cold as you might imagine.

I mean, all of the time that I knew her. I knew her fairly well.

Cerf:

She was such fun to fight with! I remember that we would read books together once in a while. She had an apartment over on East Fifty-seventh Street. Before I married Phyllis, sometimes I would...

Q:

You knew them then?

Cerf:

Oh, I've known Blanche...

Q:

I knew that you knew them but I didn't know that you knew them that intimately.

Cerf:

Blanche and I would read together. Alfred would go up to the country. They had a very funny relationship. She disliked the country in winter as much as I did. She had this New York apartment and we'd often have dinner together. We'd read our manuscripts and stop every once in a while to have a drink and fight with each other. I'll never forget...one time I was reading a book by a fellow named Prokosch and grumbling. It was boring me to death. Blanche had a memory like an
