magazine! The result was that I had to go apologize to the Miss America contest and I had to apologize to two of the sponsors. Letters came pouring in, protesting, “We always thought you were such a nice man. How could you insult these girls this way?" Well, of course I was outraged and so was Moss. This was private badinage--definitely not meant for publication. I reminded this fellow, “I could go to Mr. Luce and tell him the story that you told about how one girl made the cover of Life. You'd be bounced out of your job in no time.” We didn't have him fired, but we did see that he was transferred away from entertainment and sent up to Canada. For all I know he's still up there. I never quite forgave him because I thought this was dirty pool, but it's an interesting story of how indiscreet slips like this can put you in a very bad light.

Q:

You're saying somewhat reminds me of, isn't it...wasn't that the one, Dorothy Kilgallen on “What's My Line?" about how she wrote up the talk back stage and her being a reporter at all times?

Cerf:

Yes, but this was idle conversation. What do a lot of men say when they're sitting on a beach and a lot of pretty girls come by in scanty bathing suits? There are usually some rather sexy remarks. That's the way men are constituted!

Anyway, the whole theatrical business was angry at
