allowed into any of the casinos there. When he or any of his friends come and are recognized, they manage to keep him from playing because he can beat them. Of course it takes great skill and he has to have a fantastic memory. He remembers the cards that have been played and he shows you how you can do it. Anyhow, he has just done a new book now called Beat the Market about the stock market. That's going to be even more successful than Beat the Dealer--if he knows what he's talking about!

Q:

Everybody's interested.

Cerf:

These days they need a book for beating the market because the market is tottering. Anyway, Beat the Dealer was fun. He was given a big party for that book.

Beat the Market?

Cerf:

Beat the Dealer. The Governor of Nevada and Cary Grant came to it. They both are friends of Thorpe. It was quite a party. Most of the people forgot about the author when Cary Grant came in.

A year later I spoke at the opening of a new civic auditorium in Reno. The Governor was Sawyer at the time, a very nice little man. After he introduced me and before I started my regular speech, I said, “You know, I met Governor Sawyer and Cary Grant at a party given for one of our authors
