These are two Texas oil men, and Spindletop is the story of one of the great gushers and the beginning of the oil boom down in Texas.

October, 1955, was pub date for a couple of books that are worth mentioning. One was Waterfront by Bud Schulberg, which won many awards as a movie. This was a case, however, where the movie came first and the novel came afterwards.

Q:

I've never heard of that.

Cerf:

Schulberg had already outlined the book to us, but when he got half way through, he decided that it was going to make a greater movie, so he stopped writing the book and started the movie. It starred Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint and made heroes of lots of people. Then he finished the book with the great help of Saxe Commins. It was no great shakes in book form: not in the same league with Sammy or The Disenchanted.

In 1955, we published a book called Heritage by Anthony West. Anthony West is the illegitimate son of H. G. Wells and Rebecca West. This is public knowledge. He never made any attempt to conceal it. Heritage is the story of the childhood that he spent with these two brilliant but erratic parents. Sometimes they would both be cooing over him, vying for his affection, and other times both of them would forget him entirely. Rebecca West has never forgiven
