I went downstairs to get a haircut in the King David Hotel after breakfast. There was only one barber there, and there was a German in the chair, and the barber was talking German to him--very fluent German. And after him came a Frenchman who was ahead of me. The barber talked French to him. And then it was my turn and he talked perfect English to me. I said, “I've been listening to you. I notice you talk very good German and French and perfect English. What nationality are you?”

He drew himself up proudly and said, “I am a Jew.”

I remember the thrill I got at this man saying so proudly, “I am a Jew.”

Anyway, after we left Palestine, we went to Syria and then by train to Istanbul. Harold and I, I must explain to you, were great friends but also great rivals. We were jealous of each other. We used to watch each other like hawks. When one of us got to talking to anybody, the other would run up to see if he wasn't missing something. Like kids we were. When there was one Paris Herald we'd toss for who would read it first. When we got to a room, we found the best way to do was to toss for the best bed. If there was one bathtub we tossed for who got the first bath. We tossed for everything. That was the way we kept the peace.

We went to Baalbek, where there were some ruins, and we must have eaten something that disagreed with us, because when we got to Istanbul--the second day we were in Istanbul-- we were leaning over the bridge at the Golden Horn, watching
