had a couple of weekends at Hyde Park with F.D.R. and one at the White House. My god, you can't buy that for cash.

But I'll tell you a few stories about Roosevelt, and then we'll close for the day. One night I went down there alone to see him. This was heaven, to have a night alone with the President. I had become very friendly with his secretary, Miss le Hand--Missy. I went down and Missy said, “He's up in his study. You can go right up.” So I went upstairs, and here in his study was the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, with two piles of books, one on the left side of him, one on the right side of him. He was signing his name in book after book on the right side and putting it on the pile on the left side. He was so intent on what he was doing that he didn't even hear me come into the study.

Finally I said, “Mr. President, what are you doing?” He looked up when he saw me and said, “I'm putting my name in these books. These people, these tourists, who come through the White House, don't realize that all the books here are my personal property. They don't belong to the White House. They're mine.” He said, “I'm putting my name in them so they will know.” I said, “You can't be serious. Why, with your name in them, I'm going to steal a few of them myself! These books will disappear ten times as fast as before.” He said, “Golly, I never thought of that,” and stopped signing the books.
