Q:

It never comes with any other books, for instance, like the Penkovsky Papers?

Cerf:

There's a book in our house right this minute that was sent to us by the FBI. I don't know whether we're going to do it. It's a story about a Russian who defected and came over here. It's a story, though, that's already been described in a couple of other books, but not in such detail. Whether it's worth a whole book or not, I don't know. We've stayed very friendly with the FBI. Our dealings with Mr. Hoover have been just about perfect.

They bought thousands of copies of The F.B.I. Story.

Q:

It's wonderful propaganda for them.

Cerf:

Sure.

I got to know Mr. Hoover later quite a lot better because when I married Phyllis--I haven't got to my marriage yet-- Phyllis‘aunt, Lela Rogers, who was the mother of Ginger Rogers and who brought Phyllis up, was a good friend of J. Edgar Hoover. Lela Rogers has always leaned on the right side. I'm not going into her history, but we've had lots of battles over this. She's wonderful and did a great job bringing up Ginger and Phyllis, and Phyllis will tell you that she did. When I married Phyllis, part of our honeymoon was spent in Washington, and J. Edgar Hoover loaned us his car and chauffeur while we were in Washington. We went through the building and we shot at the targets. We saw their full layout. The Chief was wonderful to us.
