I remember the other day when I was being interviewed on Ronald Reagan's visit to Bitburg, the interviewer said, “Hey, there's a friend here who wants to talk to you.” And it was this guy. He said, “Moe, how are you?”

I said, “Oh, geez.” He stole the footage for us. We got other people who got us footage, channel four footage, all television footage.

John then did some little bit of shooting in workers' homes. I remember there's a wonderful interview that we have from channel two. Sandy -- I forget his name, he became the producer of the CBS Evening News. A lot of these people moved on to big jobs. But we got that. Then we went to Tony Schwartz, and he worked on sound. I remember Johnny lugging hundreds of pounds of equipment that we would borrow, old equipment, go up the stairways to people's homes to interview them at home. We focused on a worker with her kids, an Hispanic worker would be a focal point, so we had to go to her home to interview her. Tony was there doing the sound on it.

Then when the film was finished, Johnny rented a studio with a Moveola to do the editing with Pat, and when he was wrapping it up, I came in and looked at it, then wrote the narration. We called in Ossie Davis and asked Ossie to come in and to read the narration and tape it, and that was the film.

That reminds me. Ossie during the strike was featured in “Jamaica”, a musical comedy, and in it were Lena Horne and Ricardo Montalban. I remember before the strike started, because that lasted through the strike, I would go to Ossie in his dressing room to tell him what was happening, and the organizing campaign and the strike, just inform him of everything that was happening. Before the strike, he wrote a documentary that was produced for a Negro history program that would then be performed in February before the strike. It went up to the Montefiore contract and the organizing of hospital workers. I remember we were rehearsing it on a Sunday morning, and Robert DeCormier, the director now of one of the big choral groups, he was Belafonte's choral director. So Bob was doing the music, to arrange the music, and Pete Seeger was going to do the songs that night. Bob was there at the rehearsal, and who do you think was the narrator? Ricardo Montalban. Bob DeCormier said to me, “There's only one person in the world who could get Ricardo Montalban to give up a Sunday, his only day off, to come in Sunday morning to do this rehearsal and then to perform it tonight. That's Ossie Davis.”

When the strike ended, at that time Ruby was starring with Sidney Portier in the Lorraine Hansbury play, “Raisin in the Sun,” at the same
