In the 1960s and 1970s, Edward I. Koch served as Greenwich Village Democratic Party district leader, New York City Councilman, and U.S. Congressman for New York's 17th and 18th districts. From 1978 until 1989 he served three terms as one of New York City's most popular and outspoken mayors.
