in the past (and it's unfair on my part to be this way) but I don't like people who drink a lot. I think He drinks a lot. I once went to his hotel room to seek his endorsement, and he evidently drinks alone, too, which is even worse. There was this big bottle of scotch, and it was clear that he was drinking alone.

Q:

So it's scotch. It's hard liguor, he drinks alone, and it's not sipping wine or something like that.

Koch:

No, no. That's just a sidelight. In any event, the district was for McCarthy and all the clubs. I have clubs that are far more radical than the people in the district, but that's okay. I seem somehow or other to survive even though they don't think I'm radical enough -- the clubs. People think I'm okay.

Q:

Let's just make a footnote to that. Which of the clubs are the most radical in the district?

Koch:

Yes. The VID, the Lexington Club. Those are the two most radical. There are 13 in my district altogether. The ones that I would consider middle of the road are the Jefferson, which is Stuyvesant Town, and the New Democratic Club, which is in the '50s. Eddie Costikyan was the major force there. The Midtown Club, which is the Kipps Bay area. Those would be three moderate clubs. Then there's the Lenox Hill Club, which has a very excitable leadership, not a terribly good one, and they
