instead of Dem Chief Koch,” they say, “Reform Leader Koch Supports Lindsay.”

Well, I can only tell you that Marvin Gerson, one of Lindsay's campaign people, subsequently said to me, since Lindsay won by 100,000 votes in the whole election, that it was my endorsement that made that possible -- for him to win. I don't think that's true; it's very complimentary, but 100,000 votes he thought were swung by my endorsement because he said that he was in Brooklyn on that Monday on the boardwalk and that's all that people were talking about -- that Ed Koch, who had beaten Carmine DeSapio, had come out for Lindsay: a Democratic district leader.

Well, again on Monday there was a call from Bob Price, who I did not know other than the fact that he was the campaign manager of Lindsay and who is now a very good friend of mine -- I really like him. He supported me for mayor and Congressman and councilman -- he's done a whole host of things for me.

Q:

This is even though at the time he was a Republican, as was Lindsay.

Koch:

Yes, and we did not know one another. I'd never met him at that time. He calls up and he says he would like... Maybe he called up Tuesday. I can't remember now whether it was
