him, “No, I'm leaving. I'm not going on with these people on a television program where you going to bring me on stage like a trained poodle. Not me.” He said, “Suit yourself.” And I left.

Now, we subsequently became very good friends. He became deputy mayor: I would see him, I would talk to him, and he never forgot what I did, particularly since I then was placed on trial by Tammany Hall along with Carol. J. Raymond Jones held a trial where they were going to drum us out of our party leadership and drum us out of the party. And they had a trial at the Commodore Hotel, and in the meantime of all of the reform district leaders, very few came to our defense. The only ones that I would say were decent -- I can only think of one: Franz Leichter. He was very supportive. There may have been others but I can't remember them.

Q:

Franz Leichter was district leader at this time. Is that the Riverside Democratic Club?

Koch:

Yes.

Q:

And that was Bill Ryan's old club.

Koch:

Correct.

Q:

And he was very supportive. They were trying to get Carol
