There were some VID people there who were scared to death when I did that. I mean supposingly they had yelled back, “No!” (laughs)

Okay. So out of that meeting I formed the MacDougal Area Neighborhood Association called MANA, and we met for a year. First we met over at the Village Gate. And on the committee I tried to put various interests that would be involved. I had a coffee house owner, but he was no good -- he didn't really care about the community; he only cared about his operations. That wasn't D'Lugoff -- that was another guy of Cafe Wah. I can't even remember his name.

Well, on the committee -- and I asked Wally Popolizio to be the chairman of it and Harry Rissetto to be on it, because he was sort of like Mr. Papa in the area, and they put on a lot of people. I think they had 20 or 21 people on it. And there were DeSapio people on there. There was one VID person on there, a woman who lived on MacDougal Street -- she didn't add much to it.

Q:

You don't remember her name?

Koch:

Yes, Barbara Northrup. The other people -- Wally Popolizio would know all of their names. Harry Rissetto is now in Connecticut. Anyway, he had a liquor store, a liquor package store.
