Yes.

Anna phoned me in London that Senator Thye was planning to have a markup of the Senate Subcommittee on June 16th. I begged her to phone him to ask him if he wouldn't put it off until June 18th. She did this, and Thye actually did delay the Subcommittee meeting one day, although he was a little surprised by the request.

On the morning of the 16th I flew to Washington and stayed with Florence that afternoon and the next day did an intensive series of visits with Thye, Young and Chavez. The result was only four million over the House figures, or $53,782,000, for fiscal '54. This did not seem to me very good and I decided that some new steps would have to be taken if we were to get anything adequate out of the full committee, as it is especially tough to raise figures in the full committee.

However, I had obtained the interest of Bridges and Chavez would always go along, so I decided to try to commit Bridges as to just what he would do in the full committee.

I returned to Washington the week the full committee was going to meet and asked for some preliminary conversation with Bridges in which I assured him of my interest and support and respect for what he had done in the past and for
