really never got to know him at all until near the time of his death.

Q:

Were you frightened of his silence?

Lasker:

No, I was just irked by it and puzzled by it. I didn't know how to get through it; I didn't know how to reach him.

Q:

Did he object to vivacity on your part?

Lasker:

No, no. He could stand any amount of vivacity and not be particularly responsive. It's extraordinary. From me or from my mother it seemed rather to please him, but he didn't reply or he didn't get lively himself particularly.

Q:

Mr. Gunther said that he was a very successful man.

Lasker:

Well, he was successful as a small-town banker, and he was successful as an entrepreneur; he had invested in various businesses and he was considered, I suppose, wealthy in a small community in Wisconsin, when I was a child.

Q:

What sort of a house did you live in?

Lasker:

We lived in a very nice house on a large lot in this
