and they said, “What?” And I said, “Yes, Alice.” “Well,” they said, “we don't have a name like that in this family,” and I said, “All right, but I like this name and please name her Alice,” and they did.

Q:

Were you addicted to Alice in Wonderland?

Lasker:

I don't know. I wasn't particularly addicted to Alice in Wonderland. I don't know how this happened. But at any rate, they named her Alice and she's a great comfort to me. She lives here in New York. She's my only sister, and I have no brothers.

Q:

Did you go to the grade schools in Wisconsin?

Lasker:

I went to grade schools in Watertown. I went to a school called the Lincoln School. I remember that my favorite teacher in the school was Miss Stacy; she was the second grade teacher and she was an adorable and loving and sweet woman. And I remember that a woman who impressed me the most was called Miss Krangle, and she was the eighth grade teacher and superintendent of the school, and she had tremendous energy and tried to give students higher standards and tried to push them to do well in their studies. It was very difficult because the classes had 30 or 35 students and very mixed. The children were all the way from retarded to moderately bright, and it was tough and very dull to wait for others to get along with their lessons.
