Lasker:

Yes, it simplifies the process for them.

We supported Li in 1954 with $60,000 to supply equipment to produce two pituitary hormones which his group isolated some time ago. They were growth hormone and the lactogenic hormone. So far as I know, not even lactogenic hommone is produced inany commercial quantity as yet, but he still is a productive worker. He's in an area where very few people are brilliant enough to follow.

Q:

Would it not be useful if he were elsewhere then, here he could have closer disciples?

Lasker:

Well, he's now thinking about spending some time in Boston each year at the Childrens Cancer Research Foundation.

Q:

What's the determining factor for his present location?

Lasker:

Well, he has a great deal of status at the University of California, and although he's a full professor he's not required to do any teaching in a formal way: he trains workers in his laboratory.
