As you talked to the various leaders about coming out for Stevenson...
Normally, Wagner, Daly and Lawrence would be cordial to me and would listen to me rather sympathetically. In this they had decided already.
Had you discussed the fact that Stevenson hadn't shown a positive attitude?
Lawrence did, but the others didn't. Lawrence said he would have been for him but that Stevenson didn't indicate that he really wanted the nomination.
Was there any possibility of a league on a religious basis there; I mean, all of these leaders being of one faith?
Well, I think that maybe the fact that Kennedy was a Catholic might have influenced them some, but I think largely that the Kennedys did everything that it took to get the nomination. They had a tremendous number of persuasive workers. They promised
