But there's many a slip between that and the planting of the trees, as Commissioner Moses is definitely hostile to trees and says, “You don't know how many awful trees you've made us plant, and why do you make us plant them on First Avenue?” Well, the attitude of the Park Commissioner who doesn't want the City to be a park is very hard to understand, but that's the way he is. Isn't that funny? It's unbelievable, isn't it?

It has meant, of course, that the city has had to increase its greenhouse and space.

No, they just go out and buy them, buy them from growers.

What about the flower-bulbs?

The flowers they buy from commercial growers. They get bids on them. They don't bother to do anything economically, like grow some trees or develop some chrysanthemums, or anything like that. I mean, they did that about the hardy chrysanthemums and I think they still do, because they still have them, but on this second project they were kind of hostile to the whole thing, and they just do it; they just say what can they do, we just have influence with the Mayor; that is, they have to plant, but they don't do it with any love or interest or intelligence.

Certainly not with the right spirit.
