and surgery for defects as a result of rheumatic fever or congenital heart defects but not interested in arteriosclerosis or hyper tension or any of the main causes of heart attack or stroke. She was really just interested in this one phase of it, and she said wouldn't I give her some help to pay for some of these people that she was bringing over, that she'd tried to get some money from the Rockefellers and she'd tried various sources of funds and had gotten some small amount of money from Rockefeller. I explained to her that I was deeply in sympathy with her and that I would give her some small amount of money. But I said to her, “How is it that you do all this yourself? Isn't it a great responsibility?”

She said, “Yes, it really is. I've had a very hard day today.”

I said, “What happened?”

She said, “Yesterday one of the woman I brought over and who is to be operated on today asked me to come into her room, and I knew that she was a Communist from the Communist coal mining section of Belgium, and I knew that all this group were against me and against my husband. But I didn't know anything about this woman personally except that she needed this help in the form of operation. The woman said, ‘Here's a letter. I'm going to mail this tonight or have it mailed and it will say, “If I die, you are responsible.” It will ruin you in Belgium. I just want to warn you of this.”'”
