Q:

Did he receive you pleasantly?

Lasker:

Oh, yes, he was very agreeable and friendly, and we were always on very good terms with him.

Q:

Did you discuss your heart bill with him?

Lasker:

I don't recall that we did. He talked about the fact that he had been visited by doctors, scolding him about his attitude in favor of national health insurance, and he showed contempt for their reactionary attitude toward health insurance. He also talked about the incidence of unnecessary accidents which seemed to interest him.

We went to see Senator Murray, to ask him to urge President Truman to send another health message, which Murray did, and the second health message was delivered to Congress on the 19th of May, 1947.

During this same visit, Florence made an appointment with Mr. Leslie B, one of the President's closest friends. We called on him for the first time and discussed and asked his help to get support of other Democratic Senators for national health insurance. He was then the Secretary of the Senate and powerful beyond any belief, because he was known to be the
