that Senator Pepper who is interested, whose wife died of cancer in March, was very interested in holding the interferon money in conference. He felt that she hadn't been properly helped, in Miami, and she certainly wasn't properly diagnosed. He hasn't got a diagnosis for her yet. They don't yet know what kind of a cancer she had or where it came from.
He held a hearing suggested by me, on frontiers of cancer research, and we suggested about 35 outstanding doctors who were interested in various types of cancer -- lung cancer, breast cancer, intestinal cancer, skin cancer, a variety of “experts”. We suggested Dr. Salmon of the University of Arizona, who has a new method of determining whether or not an individual's cancer will respond to certain drugs or not. Growing a sample of the cancer (once you've been operated on) in an agar plate or test tube, and then testing ten or more drugs, you can see to which drugs this tumor responds. Now, you know, you give patients a whole group of drugs, and they're just responding to maybe one of the drugs and not to the others.
And the side effects are disastrous.
And the side effects of the drugs are disastrous, so that this is of the greatest importance, to have a test.
That's interesting --
