where the duke is independent and does as he likes, but technically comes under the king, which would be Johnson.
He has tremendous seniority, doesn't he.
He is senior, he is the chairman of the full Appropriations Committee, and he really does whatever he likes. And he doesn't take an interest in medical research. Somehow or other we're going to have to break this down. I do know -- I did meet him and have some chance to talk with him, first at a dinner that was given by Mr. and Mrs. Walker at the time of Mrs. Block's exhibition last spring.
You mean Walker of the gallery?
Johnny Walker of the National Gallery, and I did talk to him again at a party that Captain and Mrs. Robb gave at the White House for the wedding anniversary of the President and Mrs. Johnson . It was a very small group of people, and Mahon was there. And I talked, to him at Roger Stevens' one night. He's courteous but he's just absolutely, you can feel that he's dead set against doing anything.
Do you have any stalwarts in the House now?
