Without spelling this out, the idea of writing about the troubles facing Brazil, which can get lost in the daily newspaper-all I was trying to say to the American reader is that Brazil is a terribly important place which is having very difficult times, and it is a place you ought to be conscious of, and ought to be watching and paying more attention to, because of what goes on there may have major effects in the United States. I see from the look on your face that you're not convinced by that. I wouldn't do a thing like that, except very rarely, but I just feel that Brazil is one of those places that Americans don't pay enough attention to. It's a country of seventy million people. This was done simply to focus attention on Brazil. Does this make sense to you?

Yes, it does. In reading the editorial, it advanced one's feeling about Brazil a little, but not much.

Maybe the editorial wasn't-

I wasn't exactly sure-I've seen this type of editorial often enough, and I was interested to know what was its purpose.

Oakes:

Maybe it wasn't as successful as it should have been. I almost always feel they ought to have been a whole lot better than they actually were, and this may have been a case very much in point, but anyway, this was the purpose of it. It wasn't something I would do often, because it wasn't trying to convince anybody of anything or make a major point, but the purpose of it was this-I suppose I have to add that in my thinking yesterday, in putting this there, I had to weigh this against other material that I was going
