absence, and represent his, your, and the news department's point of view. You will be hearing from John as to the first meeting.”

That is a little quote from a memo of Arthur Sulzberger, Punch Sulzberger, to Harrison Salisbury, also dated September 26. As soon as he received my note, he sent that to Salisbury, and that is how Salisbury got into the first meeting to discuss this whole question.

At that first meeting, which was September 28th (1966), the minutes of that are entitled: “Discussion Re Possible Op-Ed Page,” and the participants were: myself, as the chairman of it, Salisbury (representing Daniel), Dan Schwartz, the then Sunday editor or assistant Sunday editor, I am not certain at this point if he had replaced Lester Markel or not.

Q:

I don't think he had.

Oakes:

Possibly not, but in any case, Dan was there representing the Sunday department, and Scotty Reston was also present.

I'd be perfectly glad to put this memo into the book, into the record, if you want, but if not, I will just give you a little digest of it verbally, if that would be all right.

Q:

Sure.
