Course Reserves Submission Guidelines

Electronic Reserves and Photocopies

Most reserves operations in the Columbia University Libraries will convert photocopied submissions for journal articles and book chapters to electronic format, if possible.

The libraries will scan photocopies of articles from journals and chapters from books if submitted by faculty for reserves. Under the fair use provisions of the Copyright Act, we will scan one article from an issue of a journal and small portions of a book. If you have questions, please contact the reserves unit that you will be using.

Please follow these guidelines:

  • Provide good quality, single-sided photocopies with a title page for the source. Please limit each item to a single page orientation, either portrait or landscape.
  • Provide a full citation, as it appears in your syllabus.
For journal articles include: author, title, journal title, volume, date and pagination.
For chapters of books include: author, title of chapter, book title, publisher, date of publication and pagination.
  • Course packs or materials which have been included in a course pack will not be scanned.
  • The libraries process materials in the order they are received. Please submit articles and chapters to be scanned as soon as possible.

*Students may access electronic reserves material by using the Course Reserves search on CLIO or from your CourseWorks page.
