Frequently Asked Questions

I am a native speaker of Turkish. I have visited Turkey many times, I but have never taken Turkish formally. Should I take a Turkish class? And if so, which level should I take?

You should contact Etem Erol or Prof. Nader Sohrabi. Most probably you will be placed in Advanced Turkish. Selections of literary, journalistic and academic texts in Modern Turkish may serve you as a formal introduction to Turkish literature and culture. The course may also improve your writing skills in Turkish.

I am a complete beginner. Can I take Elementary Turkish in the Spring Semester?

No. Both Elementary II and Intermediate II courses offered in the Spring are a continuation of the Fall Elementary I and Intermediate I. You have to wait until next Fall to be able to enroll.

I am not a complete beginner. Can I take Elementary Turkish in the Spring Semester?

Perhaps. You should contact Etem Erol

I have studied Turkish at a University or school other than Columbia. Which level should I enroll in?

You need to take a placement exam to determine the appropriate class for you.

What does the Placement Exam consist of and how can I take it?

The Placement Exam is very similar in content and format to a final exam. it is made up of three sections: Reading Comprehension, where you are asked to read a passage and answer questions, grammar section, and a composition section where you write a short essay on one out of a few topics you can choose from. Once done with the written part of the exam, which takes about two hours, you will meet with an instructor for a brief oral interview to determine your level in speaking.

To arrange for a Placement Exam, please contact the instructor of the section you plan to take.

Are there any classes I can take beyond the Advanced level?

Yes, there are. See the section on Intermediate Ottoman. If you still have questions you should contact Prof. Nader Sohrabi.

I am considering taking an intensive summer program. What should I do?

You should contact Etem Erol

I already studied Turkish and would like to waive the University language requirement. What should I do?

You need to take a Turkish Proficiency Exam. You should contact Etem Erol.

What does the Proficiency Exam consist of and how can I take it?

You need to contact Etem Erol in MEALAC to arrange for a Proficiency Exam. The Proficiency Exam consists of a selected text, generally in your area of specialization. You are expected to answer in writing some questions about the text, write a short essay on a related question, and translate a portion of the text into English. The exam takes about two hours.
