DOES THEATRE MATTER?

Panelists included:
Robert Brustein, theatre critic, The New Republic, founding director, Yale Repertory and American Repertory Theatres, and NAJP senior fellow; Kathleen Chalfant, actress; Robert Marx, vice president, The Samuels Foundation; Joanna Settle, artistic director, Division 13 Productions; Joan Jeffri, director, Program in Arts Administration, Teachers College, Columbia University and discussion moderator

THEATRE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A WAY TO CAPTURE AND EXPLORE our most vital experiences. In the space of half a century the American theatre has grown to include regional theatres, new playwrights, community-based efforts, university impresarios, off, off off, and off off off Broadway, as well as the Dying Invalid herself. Not only the state of the world but the neglected state of the arts threatens to diminish our most essential experiences.

On April 23, 2003 at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, a panel of respondents, including NAJP '03 Senior Fellow Robert Brustein, responded to that question, "Does theatre matter?" The event was presented by the Program in Arts Administration, Teachers College; the Theatre Division, School of the Arts, Columbia University; and the National Arts Journalism Program.
