Partnerships, Special Initiatives, & Educational Outreach

A. Industry, national laboratory, and major institution partnerships

We have successfully partnered with industrial companies, national laboratories and other major institutions for our current scientific efforts and recruitment. This includes:

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory, Center for Functional Nanomaterials
  • IBM Watson
  • GE Global Research Center
  • Alcatel-Lucent Bell Laboratories
  • The Earth Institute
  • RSoft Design Group
  • City College of New York
  • Fisk University

B. Special Initiatives and Educational Outreach

An IGERT special initiatives fund is available for the IGERT Associates and Fellows to develop or organize at their own choosing. With an annual budget of $5,000, this includes any research, extra-curricular professional development or educational activities that benefit the cohort.

Our IGERT partners with the Columbia Double Discovery Center and the Columbia Engineering Youth Programs, to introduce a new generation of urban youth to potential careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In addition, IGERT Fellows and Associates will be encouraged to mentor aspiring undergraduates to bring out the best in their scientific education and training.

C. Nanoscience Undergraduate Education

Funded by the National Science Foundation, this special initiative strengthens the emphasis on nanoscience and nanotechnology at Columbia. Highly-motivated and leading undergraduate candidates will be reviewed for selected research internships at Columbia, with optional partnerships with Brookhaven, IBM Watson, GE Global Research, Alcatel-Lucent, and the Earth Institute. Interested undergraduates are encouraged to Prof. Chee Wei Wong.

Application Information

"The IGERT program is intended to establish new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce."
