Journalism School announces Eisenstaedt Awards for Outstanding Magazine Photography

NEW TALENT AWARD WINNER MARTIN SCHOELLER

After launching his photography career in Germany, Martin Schoeller came to the United States in 1993 and spent three years working as an assistant to Annie Leibovitz. He jump-started his freelance business by taking portraits of people he met on the street. This work gained recognition for the strong, visual impact the images conveyed, and editorial assignments quickly followed. He joined the Saba Agency in 1997. Since 1998, his work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Us, The New York Times Magazine, Interview, Spin, Premiere, Worth and Newsweek, among others. At age 32, Schoeller appreciates his good fortune, noting, "It's a great feeling to have my photography published in my own favorite magazines and to work with amazing people in all walks of life." In addition to editorial portraiture and advertising photography, Schoeller is currently working on a documentary project on the Newark, N.J., Police Department.

In November 1999, Schoeller was named Contributing Photographer for The New Yorker. He won his first award from American Photography in 1998, followed by awards from Communication Arts and American Photography in 1999.
