Andrew Delbanco

Andrew Delbanco is Julian Clarence Levi Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia, and is also a member of the History Department. He has written extensively about American culture, past and present.

Among his previous books are "The Puritan Ordeal," winner of Columbia's Lionel Trilling Award in 1990, which demonstrated that the colonial founders of New England had themselves gone through a wrenching immigrant experience, and "Required Reading: Why our American Classics Matter Now," published in 1997. In "The Death of Satan," published in 1995, he discussed how Americans have lost their sense of what constitutes evil.

"The Real American Dream" is based upon the William E. Massey Sr. Lectures in the History of American Civilization that Delbanco gave at Harvard.
