Letter from Donna Buehler, President

The Alumni Association is creating a solid foundation of enhancing communication and strengthening community among our alumni world wide. This has been the theme of my two year term. You may review both accomplishments and future goals by reading our Annual Report to the Board (click here). Your Alumni Association Board Officers are: President-Elect Dr. Penny Schwartz '78, 1st Vice President Anat Leonard '02, 2nd Vice President Suzanne Towns '01 and Secretary Jane Bender '69. Want to network with other Alumni working in your field of interest? The Alumni Relations Office has created a program to connect you with your fellow peers. We maintain a list of domestic and international alumni who volunteer to assist students, recent graduates and career changers. Assistance may range from an informational interview regarding the state of the job market in your area and relocation information to general networking. To become a member, please email your name, contact information and field of interest to [email protected].

Dr. Penny J. Schwartz '78 is President-Elect of the CUSSW Alumni Association
Dr. Schwartz is Program Director, Resource Entitlement Advocacy Program (REAP), Department of Social Work Services, Mt. Sinai Medical Center. She worked as an in-patient social worker for 11 years, then founded the REAP program in 1989. Penny is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Mt. Sinai. She received her DSW from Hunter College School of Social Work and her Master of Science in Social Work at Columbia University School of Social Work where she focused on clinical direct practice. Dr. Schwartz was elected as a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Brookdale Center on Aging of Hunter College. She services the following boards: NF, Inc. the GGH September Fund and the Brookdale Center on Aging Council of Advisors. She co-chairs the Citywide Medicaid Advisory Board and has served as NASW 2nd Vice President and Secretary. Penny will serve as President of the Alumni Association beginning in July 2007.

Archivist Laura Guiterman Freund Retires
Laura Guiterman Freund, CUSSW's Archivist and Historian, has retired after 42 years of service. Laura has worked tirelessly for the Office of Development and Alumni Relations as a liaison for the alumni and the School. She has overseen the operation of the office many times during her tenure and has worked with many Alumni Association committees including the Goldson Committee, the Louard Scholarship Committee and the Reed Scholarship Committee. Over the years, Laura archived and catalogued the School's historical documents and photographs. We are most grateful to Laura for her extraordinary dedication and for her many years of service.

Photographers Andrew Lichtenstein and Steve Liss document the social, political and economic repercussions of the U.S. criminal justice system in a photography exhibition now on display at CUSSW. Read more.

Nancy D. Miller '75 Receives Social Work Pioneer Award
Congratulations to Nancy Miller '75, who has been honored with the Social Work Pioneer Award by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Foundation. The Social Work Pioneer Award was established by NASW "to honor members of the social work profession who have contributed to the evolution and enrichment of the profession." Read more.

Obituaries

Zelda Foster '57
Zelda Foster was the former director of a large social work department in a Brooklyn, Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). She co-founded and was the first president of the New York State Hospice Association. Zelda Foster was committed to improving the care of the dying and the role of health professionals in challenging and impacting the quality of patient care. She wrote many articles on a range of social work contributions and lectured widely on hospice and end-of-life care.

Manny Diaz, Jr. '53
Manny Diaz, Jr. died suddenly on March 20, 2006. He was born in Puerto Rico in 1922 and moved to New York City in 1927. After serving in the U.S. Military, he received his BS from City University of New York and his MSW at CUSSW. Mr. Diaz was a leader in the New York City Puerto Rican community, an activist against racism and poverty, and youth advocate.

Joan B. Eisenstein '55
Joan B. Eisentein passed away in November of 2005. She was a devoted member of the School. She is survived by her husband Howard L. Eisenstein.

Harriet Hoptner '60GS, '61LS, Staff
Harriet was the CUSSW librarian for many years and was loved by many for the work she did at the School. She passed away in January of 2006.

Antonia H. Mol '65
Antonia came to study at CUSSW from the Netherlands, and after graduation she went to work at the University of Amsterdam. She passed away in January of 2006.
