Susan A. Nayowith '84 Elected President of NASW-NYC Chapter
Congratulations to Susan Nayowith ’84 who was recently elected as president elect for NASW-NYC. Susan is a very active member of the CUSSW Alumni Association, having held many leadership positions including president elect (1998), president (1999-2001), and chair of the Conference Planning Committee (2009). Susan works for the NYC Department of Homeless Services as the director of the Office of Client Advocacy Policy and Planning. She has experience working for not-for-profit and government agencies and serves on several boards of agencies promoting social justice.

Jeanette C. Takamura, Dean of CUSSW was honored with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for her outstanding contributions to the promotion of social welfare policies and programs and the status of Japanese Americans. Read more >>

Hall of Fame - There's Still Time!
The CUSSW Alumni Association is currently accepting nominations for the 2010 Hall of Fame Awards. The Hall of Fame honors distinguished Columbia University School of Social Work alumni who have made outstanding contributions to the theory and/or practice of social work and who, by their example, have added distinction to the social work profession.  Nominees must have graduated from a CUSSW degree program at least 15 years prior to the year of nomination. Graduates from all fields of practice will receive full consideration in the nomination process. All nominations will be confidential. To complete the nomination form, click here. Nominations Needed for Alumni Association Board of Directors and Nominating Committee
The CUSSW Alumni Association is currently seeking nominations for the 2010 slate.  Positions include regional representatives (throughout the world), and officers:  President-Elect, Vice President and Secretary.  Regional board members serve a three year term, attend bi-monthly board meetings (in person or via teleconference) and serve on at least one Association Committee. The Vice President and Secretary must be available for meetings, serve on committees, and have a 2-year term limit. The President-Elect will serve one year as President-Elect followed by two years as President. Nominations can be sent to the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at [email protected]. Please include your name and contact information as well as the name and contact information of the nominee.

Spring 2010 Course Offerings for Alumni
The Office of Professional Excellence (OPE) is now offering courses exclusively to CUSSW alumni to advance clinical knowledge skills and fulfill course requirements for the LCSW in New York State. Learn more.

PALS (Professional Alumni Leaders in Service) Phonathon
Join Past and Present CUSSW Alumni Association Presidents, Board Members, fellow alumni and student volunteers as we kick off the PALS (Professional Alumni Leaders in Service) program with a calling party to raise support for the CUSSW Annual Fund. Phonathons will be held on February 22, 2010 and February 25, 2010 from 6:00-p:00pm at CUSSW. No experience required, training and refreshments will be provided. Bergen County, NJ
On Sunday, October 18, 2009, Brenda Johnson Gallagher ’97 hosted over 45 alumni who live or work in Bergen County, NJ as well as alumni who live in Rockland County, NY. Dean Takamura updated the group on the new initiatives of the School, student recruitment and more. The group is looking forward to getting together in January 2010 and planning more programs for the future. Our sincerest gratitude to Brenda, Michael Tozzoli ’96, and Eric Eigenbrot ’87 for organizing the gathering.

Hudson County, NJ

Alumni from Hudson County, NJ got together on Thursday, November 18, 2009, in Hoboken, NJ. Among the alumni in attendance were Emily Ball Jabbour ’06, Catherine Price ’08, and Kendra Hayes ’08.   

Broadway Night: Wishful Drinking

With the assistance of Columbia Alumni Arts League (CAAL), over 40 alumni from CUSSW and the Mailman School of Public Health got together for a nightout in NYC to Carrie Fisher’s “Wishful Drinking” at Studio 54. During the show, Carrie divulged the highs and lows of life as a Hollywood princess, including herbattles with depression, mental illness, addictions, and more. For more information on CAAL, visit http://www.cuarts.com/caal.  Membership is only $25 and benefits include discounted tickets at numerous cultural institutions.
