THEY WATCH "When I was coming up, it was a dangerous world, and you knew exactly who they were. It was us vs. them, and it was clear who them was. Today, we are not so sure who the they are, but we know they're there." George W. Bush It all started with the Agricultural Revolution. The FDA came out with that pyramid thing, and your 10th-grade health textbook said you need it to live. A little bit of pseudoscience ("your body is like a car that needs fuel, blah, blah, blah") to boot. They're all in on it -- the farmers, the corporations, Julia Child, Mr. Rogers, teachers who tell you to eat a healthy breakfast on the day of a test. Bah! Air has all the nutrients you need. Food= THEY. They write some books, show you some so-called "primary sources" and scratched-up "artifacts" and we buy every word they say. It all began with that pokey little Herodotus, that bastard. Now, whole cable channels have been founded and careers and institutions erected on this sham of a subject. History= THEY. It dominated our malls in the mid eighties. People wore clothing with splotches of it and little mirrors peppering the front. Was it a mildly socialist plot by the Swedes to make us look stupid or the CIA monitoring our every move from behind those mini-mirrors? Puffy paint= THEY.
Radiation killed Mme. Curie, but your face gets shot full of x-rays every visit while he cowers in another room. Then he drills into your face and sends you out into the world drooling. Not to mention the bib you have to wear. And why is a woman always the hygenist, but never the dentist? Dentists= THEY.
