Tibet in Harlem 2: Origins is the second annual series of Tibetan and Tibet-related films at the Maysles Cinema in Harlem. This year’s program showcases a collection of rarely screened early films — both documentary and fiction — by some of the most important Tibetan and Chinese filmmakers working in Tibet today.
overview
We are pleased to announce that two of the filmmakers in the series, Padma Tseten and Rigdan Gyatso, will be traveling from Tibet to be in attendance. Padma Tseten is the first Tibetan filmmaker in China to shoot 35mm feature films, and his works are entirely in Tibetan language. We will be screening his latest effort, The Search, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Shanghai International Film Festival, and has screened at Toronto, Locarno, and other prestigious festivals around the world. Rigdan Gyatso is an emerging filmmaker and writer from Amdo, the first to focus on making films in Tibetan for Tibetan children.

Tibet in Harlem aims to offer audiences an experience that carries beyond the screen. Most screenings will be followed by panel discussions with the filmmakers, academics, and other leading figures in Tibetan film and culture. Over the course of the series there will be special events and receptions featuring Tibetan food and refreshments, as well as items for sale. We hope to create a unique environment where audiences will be encouraged to engage in dialogue, experience other forms of Tibetan culture, and get involved.

Tibet in Harlem 2 is supported by the Henry Luce Foundation, The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation and other organizations. Tickets are sold on the basis of suggested donation and the proceeds from each event will be contributed to NGOs and organizations working inside Tibet, including Rabsal, the Tibet Village Project and Machik.
