Synopsis

The Grassland

When an old woman has lost her yak in the Tibetan district of Qinghai, her husband is sure he knows who the culprits are, but she is more concerned about avoiding further suffering for the suspects. The village head thought the notorious young men had stolen it. The suspects were reluctant to meet the head's order to vow before the Buddha. They were indeed innocent. In the end, the head's son admitted he was the thief when faced with his father's inquiry. The father led the son to apologize to the old woman. It is a tranquil and consistent film, slowly unfolded, simply put, a careful and moving study of different views of resolving conflict in a nomadic community. The Grasslands won the Best Chinese Student Short Film award in the 4th BFA international student film exhibition. It was shown in the 24th International Student Film Festival of the Russian State Institute of Cinematography, VGIK. It was also was displayed in the 3rd Annual Film Festival in Yokohama, in the 1st Korean International Youth Film Festival, and in the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The Grassland is Director Padma Tseten's first film.


Biography

Pedma Tseten

Padma Tseten was born in the Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province. He holds a post-graduate degree in Tibetan language and literature from Northwest University, and also studied at the Beijing Film Academy. He has directed the short film, The Grassland and the documentary, Tibet Shaman. His features include The Silent Holy Stone andThe Old Dog and The Search.
