Any exhibition of modern art from Iraq organized at this difficult time will necessarily encounter a number of challenges specific to the topic, since so much modern Iraqi art has been lost in recent years. Such challenges were part of the original impetus that prompted us to present this tradition of art in New York City. The main obstacle is, of couse, the disappearance of twentieth-century paintings and sculpture from the museum of modern art in Baghdad as a result of the looting in 2003. Moreover, access to works is equally difficult. A number of important Iraqi artists are not represented in this exhibition because of that.
