Columbia University Senior Design Group

My name is Eric Soltowski, I have lived half of my life on the island of Guam (US Citizen) and half of it in Texas. At the moment I am studying mechanical engineering at because I love to design; I enjoy learning how machines work, as well as learning how to utilize the fundamental principles directing them. My dream in life is to create a new or a significantly improved form of prolusion, and new type of structure to withstand the stress of the engine. Currently I am focusing my degree in graduate level electives in Thermodynamics, Turbomachinery, Propulsion, and research in the Wave Disc Engine under Professor Pejman Akbari. After graduating from Columbia University and a graduate school, I plan to help society with technological advancement. For my career goals, I hope to work as an engineer at a firm focusing on research, design, and acquisitions. My goals revolve around developing new and more efficient technology in both the civilian and military sector. My past background lies heavily in the manufacturing and production sector: stemming from my past work with Toyota and the Carleton Strength of Materials Laboratory.
I want to create and bring designs into reality. I mean everything that is involved with that process: from research, conceptualization, analysis, manufacturing, and production, to business management. I am undergoing a similar phase in my research and design project in making a shock wave compressor utilizing a sudden opening and closures to induce compressive and expansive phenomena. My end goal is to be able to get the opportunity to lead projects, which I was able to do in many of at my past experience.
My work experiences as a production engineer, laboratory researcher, sales representative, and real estate apprentice have offered me many opportunities to grow as an individual, as well as an engineer. I have developed lasting relationships with my clients and teams through showing integrity, dependability and the capability for the task at hand. In my group based projects, we cooperated together as a team to maximize synergy, and to be able to perform analytical procedures to the client’s specifications. Outside of the engineering realm, I devoted a large amount of time, under the tutelage of family and friends who were realtors and financial analysts, to engage in the business and legal realm through contracting and working with clients to help them purchase and sell homes. As a cellist, and athlete, I have learned how to multitask and complete my objectives effectively under the pressure of limited time.
