APPELLES was a Jewish artist who designed and built a tomb for Satira, wife of Darius. At Alexander's command, he made a tomb for Darius also (Gautier de Châtillon, Alexandreis IV.176-274; VII.379-430).

Alys of Bath says that her fourth husband's tomb was not as elaborate as the tomb Appelles made for Darius, WBP 497-499. [Alisoun3: Darius2].

Appelles occurs medially, WBP 499; the doubled consonants indicate a short preceding vowel.

Gautier de Châtillon, Alexandreis, ed. Mueldner, 84-87, 163-165.
