MALKYN1(ES). Malkin, a name found generally among working-class women, was also used in proverbial expressions (Whiting 90).

Harry Bailly quotes one of these proverbs, MLI 27-31. Martin Stevens suggests that, since the proverb appears after the Reeve's Tale, the Host has Malyne, the miller's daughter, in mind. [Bailly: Malyne]

Malkynes, the ME genitive case, appears medially, MLT 30.

M. Stevens, "Malkyn in the Man of Law's Headlink." Leeds Studies in English 1 (1967): 1-5; B.J. Whiting, Chaucer's Use of Proverbs, 90.
