MALYNE is the name of Symkyn's daughter in The Reeve's Tale. She reveals to Aleyne that the flour her father stole from him is hidden behind the mill. N.D. Hinton suggests that in thus "maligning" her father she lives up to her name. [Alayn: Malkyn1: Symkyn]

Malyne, a form of Malkyn, is a pet name for Mathilda (Skeat V: 126). Skeat points out that the name generally means "dish cloth" or "oven mop" and is usually the nickname for a promiscuous woman. It appears once, medially, RvT 4236.
