RUSSELL is the fox in The Nun's Priest's Tale. He flatters Chauntecleer and persuades him to close his eyes and sing. Then he grabs him by the throat and runs off with him. Chauntecleer persuades the fox to open his mouth to talk to the farmhands behind them and so saves his life. [Chauntecleer: Renard]

The name occurs once, NPT 3334, derived from OF russel, "reddish."
