YARBAS. Iarbas, king of Gaetulia, was the son of Jupiter Ammon. He fell in love with Dido when she came to North Africa and built her city of Carthage. But Dido refused his offer of marriage and chose Aeneas instead. When she realized that Aeneas was determined to leave her, she feared that Iarbas and the neighboring kings would attack and destroy her (Heroides VII; Aeneid IV.198-201, 325-326).

Yarbas is distressed when he hears the rumor that Dido is in love with Eneas, LGW 1244-1257. Dido fears that he will destroy her, LGW 1316-1318. [Dido: Eneas]

The name appears medially, LGW 1245.
