Prerequisite: Business or banking background, concentration in International Business or Finance

Workshop in International Business, Banking and Finance is a elective application course provided to second year graduate students of the M.I.A. program at Columbia University. The Masters in International Affairs (M.I.A.) degree program is designed to provide students with a broad analytical background in major fields of international affairs and specific focus in functional (International Finance and Business—IFB) and regional concentration. Students must also demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language.

The class is more than an academic exercise. Student teams (two to six students per project) work directly on selected projects with private and public sector clients. The client representatives are from senior management. One team leader and/or client manager from the student team is assigned to each client for ease of communication. Teams are obligated to adhere to client confidentiality and conflict of interest. Teams meet with the client periodically to be introduced to the project, and present preliminary and final findings. The students as a team meet with the clients on-and-off site and for varying time allotments depending on the client wishes and proposed project. The resulting project is of professional quality work presented to client in a final presentation. The duration of the project is approximately twelve weeks (the entire school semester) and six to eight hours per week per student. Professor Sam Cross, Professor Hans Decker and/or Lynda Vaz, Course Consultant each oversee a team and project and attend the client meetings.
